About this tool

Choose a JPG or JPEG file and the tool converts it to WebP right away in your browser, with a Quality slider from 0.1 to 1 (default 0.85) that re-runs the conversion as you move it. After conversion you see a preview, the pixel size and the file size in KB, and a Download button that saves jpg-to-webp.webp. Your image is never uploaded. WebP usually gives smaller files than JPEG at similar quality, though it is lossy and re-compressing an already compressed photo can reduce quality slightly. Your browser must be able to encode WebP.

How to use it

  1. Drop a JPG or choose a file.
  2. Adjust the Quality slider if you want a smaller or better file.
  3. Check the size shown under the preview.
  4. Press Download.

Common problems

The WebP is not smaller
Lower the Quality, for example to 0.7. Very optimized JPGs may not shrink much.
Only JPGs are accepted
The picker is limited to JPG and JPEG. Use the PNG to WebP tool for PNG files.
An error says the image could not be encoded
Your browser may not support WebP encoding. Try a recent version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
