About this tool
iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC, which many Windows apps, websites and email clients still reject. This tool decodes a HEIC or HEIF file with libheif (a WebAssembly decoder of roughly 2 MB that loads the first time you convert a file, not when the page opens) and re-encodes it as a JPEG at a fixed quality of 0.9. JPEG is the safest choice when you need a photo to open anywhere. Transparent areas, if any, are filled with white. The file is saved as image.jpg. Everything runs in your browser; the file is not uploaded. Only the first image in the file is converted.
How to use it
- Drop a .heic or .heif file or choose one.
- Wait for the decoder to load on first use.
- Check the preview and size.
- Press Download.
Common problems
- Could not convert this file
- Make sure the file is really HEIC/HEIF and not a renamed JPG or a file that did not finish copying.
- First conversion is slow
- The decoder (roughly 2 MB) is downloaded on first use and then reused, so later files in the same visit start faster.
- Live Photos or bursts give one picture
- Only the first image is converted, not the video part or other frames.
