Text Similarity Checker

Compare two texts and get a similarity percentage from word overlap and letter-pair matching, plus the list of shared words.

Runs in your browser Your input never leaves your device.

Method: word overlap is the Jaccard index of the two texts' word sets (case-insensitive, punctuation ignored): shared distinct words divided by all distinct words. Character similarity is the Dice coefficient on overlapping letter pairs. Overall is their average. This is a rough similarity measure, not plagiarism detection: it does not search the web or compare against any source.

About this tool

Enter two texts to get a similarity score. The tool reports word overlap (the Jaccard index of the two sets of distinct words, ignoring case and punctuation), character similarity (the Dice coefficient on overlapping letter pairs), and an overall score that is the average of the two. It also lists the words both texts share. Everything is calculated in your browser. This is a simple statistical comparison of the two texts you paste; it is not plagiarism detection and does not check the web or any database.

How to use it

  1. Paste the first text into Text A.
  2. Paste the second text into Text B.
  3. Read the overall, word overlap and character similarity percentages.
  4. Review the shared words list below the scores.

Common problems

No result appears
Both boxes need at least one word.
Score is low for texts with the same meaning
The scores compare spelling and words, not meaning, so paraphrased text scores low.
Score is high for unrelated text
Short texts and common words such as the or and can inflate overlap. Compare longer passages.
