About this tool
This tool numbers your lines or removes numbers from them. In Add mode, every line gets a prefix like 1. , 2. , 3. counting from one, and empty lines are numbered too. In Remove mode, it strips a leading number from each line together with any spaces, periods, closing parentheses or hyphens that follow it. The two modes do not touch anything else in the line. Use the Mode selector to switch. The result updates as you type, and everything runs in your browser.
How to use it
- Paste your lines into the input box.
- Choose Add numbers or Remove numbers in the Mode selector.
- Read the result in the output.
- Press Copy to use it.
Example
The empty line is numbered as line 2.
alpha beta
1. alpha 2. 3. beta
Common problems
- Remove mode deletes numbers that belong to the text
- Any line that starts with digits loses them, so 2024 report becomes report. Check lines that begin with a year or a quantity.
- Empty lines get numbers too
- Add mode numbers every line. Remove blank lines from the input first if you do not want them counted.
- The number format cannot be changed
- Numbers are always written as a number followed by a period and a space. There is no option for a different start value or separator.
