About this tool
Gives a quick score for a password out of 100, based on an estimate of its entropy in bits. It starts from the length and the character types used (lowercase, uppercase, digits, symbols), then subtracts for easy-to-guess structure: repeated characters, sequential runs such as 1234, abcd or qwer, very few distinct characters, and passwords that are, or are built on, a common password (including variants such as Password1! or p@ssw0rd). Labels run from Very weak (under 28 bits) through Weak, Medium, Strong (60 bits) to Very strong (80 bits and above). A short built-in list of common passwords is used, so this is still a rough guide, not a real cracking estimate, and leaked passwords are not checked. The password is analyzed in your browser and never sent to our server.
How to use it
- Type or paste a password.
- Read the score, the label and the length.
- Make it longer or add variety if it scores low.
- Prefer a long random passphrase from a password manager.
Common problems
- A common password shows a warning
- The word password, Password1! and similar variants are capped at a very low entropy and show a warning, however long or varied they look.
- A weak password still scores high
- Only a short built-in list of common passwords is checked, so predictable choices that are not on it, such as Tr0ub4dor&3, can still score well. Never rely on the score alone.
- Testing a real password
- The text stays in your browser, but it is safest to test a similar example and not an account password you actively use.
