Bcrypt Generator
Generate bcrypt password hashes with an adjustable cost factor, or check whether text matches an existing bcrypt hash, all in your browser.
Runs in your browser Your input never leaves your device.
Each +1 doubles the work. Costs of 11–12 can take several seconds in a browser.
About this tool
Create a bcrypt hash from any text, choosing a cost factor from 4 to 12 (default 10), or switch to verify mode to test whether text matches an existing bcrypt hash. Hashing runs in your browser using a JavaScript bcrypt library, so your text is never uploaded. Each increase of 1 in the cost factor doubles the work, so costs of 11 and 12 can take several seconds on a browser; the page shows a busy message while it works. Bcrypt only uses the first 72 bytes of the input.
How to use it
- Choose Generate hash or Verify hash.
- Enter the text, then pick a cost factor (generate) or paste the bcrypt hash (verify).
- Press the button and wait for the result.
- Copy the generated hash, or read the match / no match message.
Common problems
- It is slow at a high cost factor
- Lower the cost factor. 10 is a reasonable default; 11 and 12 are noticeably slower in a browser.
- "Does not look like a valid bcrypt hash"
- A bcrypt hash starts with $2a$, $2b$ or $2y$, then a two-digit cost and 53 more characters. Check for missing or extra characters.
- Two hashes of the same text differ
- This is normal: bcrypt adds a random salt each time. Use verify mode to compare.
