About this tool
This tool turns WebVTT subtitles into valid SRT. It reads the text block by block: the WEBVTT header and its metadata lines (such as Kind and Language), NOTE, STYLE and REGION blocks are dropped, timestamps are rewritten to the SRT form with a comma (short forms like 01:02.500 become 00:01:02,500), cue settings such as align:start are removed, and voice, class and timestamp tags like <v Bob> are stripped. Every cue is numbered from 1, replacing text cue identifiers. Paste text only; everything runs in your browser. Cues without any text are skipped, and if no cue can be found you get an error message.
How to use it
- Open your .vtt file in a text editor and copy its contents.
- Paste the text into the input box.
- Copy the converted output.
- Save it in a new file with the .srt extension.
Example
WEBVTT 01:00.000 --> 01:03.500 align:start <v Ann>Hello there</v>
1 00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:03,500 Hello there
Common problems
- Some cues are missing
- A cue needs a timing line like 00:01.000 --> 00:03.000 (the second timestamp must follow the first with -->). Blocks without one are skipped.
- Formatting tags like <i> or <b> are still in the text
- Italic, bold and underline tags are kept because many SRT players support them. Voice, class and timestamp tags are removed.
- Speaker names disappeared
- <v Name> voice tags are removed. Add the names to the text by hand if you need them.
