About this tool
This tool spells out text using the NATO phonetic alphabet, so letters are less likely to be confused over a phone or radio. Each letter becomes its code word (A is Alpha, B is Bravo, J is Juliett, X is X-ray), and each digit becomes a word such as Four or Nine. A space between words becomes a vertical bar. Other characters, such as punctuation, are kept as they are. The output is one line of words separated by spaces and is not case sensitive. The conversion runs in your browser as you type.
How to use it
- Type or paste the text you want to spell.
- Read the code words in the output.
- Press Copy if you want to share them.
Example
The vertical bar marks the space between words.
Hi 42
Hotel India | Four Two
Common problems
- Punctuation is not spelled out
- Characters such as a hyphen or an at sign are copied through as typed. Say them out loud yourself, for example dash.
- Accented letters are not converted
- Only a to z and 0 to 9 have code words. Other letters appear unchanged.
- The digits use plain words
- Digits become One, Two, Three and so on, not the special radio pronunciations such as Niner.
