Markdown to Text
Convert Markdown formatted content into clean, plain text by stripping all syntax and formatting.

About this tool
This tool removes Markdown syntax and leaves the readable text. It strips front matter at the top of the document, code fences and inline code marks, heading hashes, bold and italic markers, blockquote arrows, bullet and numbered list markers, and horizontal rules. Links keep their link text and drop the address; images keep their alt text. It uses simple pattern matching and not a full Markdown parser, so tables, nested formatting and unusual syntax may not come out cleanly. Runs of blank lines are reduced to a single blank line. Everything happens in your browser.
How to use it
- Paste your Markdown into the input box.
- The plain text appears in the output.
- Check the result and press Copy.
Example
# Title Some **bold** and [link](http://x.com) and `code`. - item
Title Some bold and link and code. item
Common problems
- Underscores inside words disappear
- Text like snake_case_name is read as italics and becomes snakecasename. Wrap such names in backticks before converting, or fix them afterward.
- Asterisks in math or lists are removed
- A line like 2*3*4 turns into 234 because the asterisks look like emphasis markers.
- Tables and HTML are not cleaned
- Table pipes and any inline HTML stay in the output. Use the HTML Tags Stripper for the HTML part.
