About this tool
Convert electric potential between volt (V), millivolt (mV), microvolt (µV), nanovolt (nV), kilovolt (kV), megavolt (MV), gigavolt (GV), statvolt (statV) and abvolt (abV). The menus show full names with symbols, and the result is labeled with the symbol, so millivolt (mV) and megavolt (MV) are easy to tell apart. Sensor signals sit in millivolts, household supplies in the hundreds of volts and power lines in kilovolts. Conversion is through volts. Statvolt (299.792458 V) and abvolt (1e-8 V) are legacy CGS units. Results show up to 8 decimals and use scientific notation for very small values.
How to use it
- Type the value to convert.
- Choose the From and To units.
- Read the result, which updates as you type.
- Use Swap to reverse the units or Copy to copy the result.
Example
230 volt to kilovolt
0.23 kV
Common problems
- mV versus MV
- Millivolt (mV) is 0.001 V and megavolt (MV) is 1,000,000 V. The capital M in the label means mega.
- Voltage drop or AC values
- This converts units only. It doesn't convert AC peak to RMS.
- Tiny results in e-notation
- Values below 0.000001 appear as scientific notation. Choose µV or nV as the target.
