About this tool
Performs a reverse DNS lookup for an IPv4 address and shows the hostname or hostnames stored in its PTR record. Enter an address such as 8.8.8.8 and the tool asks DNS over HTTPS for the matching in-addr.arpa record. This tool uses our server: the address is sent to our API, which does the lookup and may cache it for five minutes. Many addresses have no PTR record at all, and a PTR name is set by whoever controls the address range, so it can be missing, generic or not match the site you expect. Only IPv4 is supported.
How to use it
- Enter an IPv4 address.
- Press Reverse lookup.
- Read the hostnames returned, if any.
- Check the result against a forward DNS lookup if you need to confirm it.
Common problems
- Enter a valid IPv4 address
- The tool needs four numbers separated by dots. IPv6 addresses and domain names are not accepted.
- No hostname is returned
- The owner of the IP has not set a PTR record. This is common and not an error.
- The hostname does not match the website
- Reverse names belong to the network owner, often a hosting provider, so they rarely match a site's domain.
