About this tool

Converts a .ico icon to a WebP image with a Quality slider (0.1 to 1, default 0.85). WebP is a good fit for icons used on a web page: it is smaller than PNG for many images and supports transparency, which a JPG would lose. The icon is decoded by your browser and drawn at its own pixel size, so a 32x32 icon gives a 32x32 WebP. Only a single image is produced even if the .ico holds several sizes. Your browser does the encoding, so a browser without WebP encoding support cannot produce this format. Everything runs in your browser; the file is not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Drop a .ico file or choose one.
  2. Adjust Quality if wanted.
  3. Check the preview and size.
  4. Press Download to save ico-to-webp.webp.

Common problems

WebP is larger than expected
For very small flat icons, PNG can be about the same size or smaller. Compare both.
Lossy artifacts on sharp edges
Move Quality up toward 1.
An app will not open the file
Some older desktop programs do not support WebP. Use ICO to PNG there.
