About this tool
Turn a PNG into a .ico icon, for example for a favicon or a Windows shortcut. The picture is fitted inside a square without stretching, and a non-square image is centred with transparent padding. The ICO holds four standard sizes (16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels), each stored as a PNG-compressed icon image that keeps transparency, which is what favicon and Windows icon tools expect. Everything runs in your browser; the file is not uploaded.
How to use it
- Prepare a PNG, ideally square and 256x256 or larger.
- Drop the PNG or choose a file.
- Check the preview.
- Press Download.
Common problems
- Icon has empty bars at the sides
- A non-square PNG is letterboxed with transparent padding rather than stretched. Crop to equal width and height for a full-bleed icon.
- Icon is blurry at small sizes
- The ICO contains 16, 32, 48 and 256 px images and the system picks the one it needs. Design a simple, bold image for tiny favicon use.
- A very small PNG gets enlarged
- Small images are scaled up to fill the 48 and 256 px icon sizes, which looks soft. Start from a larger image.
