About this tool
Choose dog or cat, enter the pet's age in years (decimals such as 0.5 or 2.5 are fine) and get an approximate human-equivalent age. The calculator uses a common rule of thumb: the first year counts as 15 human years, the second brings the total to 24, and each year after that adds 5 for a dog or 4 for a cat. Ages under two years are interpolated, so a 6-month-old dog is about 7.5 and a cat of 1.5 years about 19.5 human years. The formula does not account for breed or size, and large dogs generally age faster than small ones. Treat the number as a fun estimate. Ask a veterinarian about real life stages and care.
How to use it
- Choose Dog or Cat.
- Enter the pet's age in years; use decimals for months (0.5 is six months).
- Read the human-equivalent age.
Example
15 + 9 for the second year = 24, then 3 more years x 5 = 39.
Dog, 5 years
Human-equivalent age: 39 years
Common problems
- No result
- The age must be greater than 0. Convert months to a fraction of a year, so 6 months is 0.5.
- The number is not a whole year
- Results are rounded to one decimal place. A 7.5-year-old pet uses the full 7.5.
- A large dog seems older in real life
- The formula ignores breed and size, so it is a rough average only.
