About this tool
Converts an internationalized domain name into its ASCII Punycode form. Enter a domain such as münchen.de and each label with non-ASCII characters is encoded and given the xn-- prefix, while plain ASCII labels are left alone, giving xn--mnchen-3ya.de. This ASCII form is what DNS and many systems use behind the scenes. The tool implements the Punycode algorithm only; it does not apply full IDNA rules such as lowercasing, Unicode normalization or checking for allowed characters, so enter your domain in lowercase. The conversion runs in your browser.
How to use it
- Enter the domain with its Unicode characters.
- Read the xn-- version in the output.
- Copy it to use in DNS settings or configuration.
Example
münchen.de
xn--mnchen-3ya.de
Common problems
- Uppercase letters give a different result
- Characters are not lowercased first. Type the domain in lowercase.
- Only a host name works
- Enter just the domain. A full URL with https:// or a path is not handled correctly.
- Registrar rejects the result
- Registries have their own rules on allowed characters, which this tool does not check.
